Joe Byrd Jazz

Joe Byrd is a lyrical bass player and to jazz fans and musicians, that is a term of art.  In the hands of Joe Byrd, the bass is a living, breathing part of the melody in addition to being primary to the rhythm section.  Over the years, Joe has performed with many famous musicians.  Based in Washington, D.C., the Showboat Lounge was one of the most famous jazz venues in the world. Byrd settled in Annapolis, Maryland in 1977. The Charlie Byrd Trio was "at home" for over 25 years at the King of France Tavern located in the Maryland Inn. From their Annapolis base, the Byrd brothers traveled the world. Instead of retiring after 40 years, Joe Byrd continues to play and create beautiful music.

Kathy on Jazz and Joe - I have always been a jazz lover. I lived in a wonderful era of music in Washington, D.C. and northern Virginia. At the supper clubs my husband and I heard the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Shirley Horn, and many more.  I met Joe and Elana Byrd in Annapolis and the nights of music with them will always be fond memories. In my heart they are my family, and I think of them every day as I crank up my Bose and Joe follows me through my house with his jazz.

Eva Cassidy

Kathy on Eva - I love music, and Eva Cassidy is one of my favorites. I had the privilege of knowing her at the end of her life, and I think of her often. Eva and I talked about life and its joys, and she did sparkle when she smiled.  Eva appreciated learning, and living. I smile every time I hear the purity of her beautiful voice, and I remember her excitement when I told her she would be back in three days as a conception.

John Ebersberger

Uniting the lyrical beauty of Impressionism with the strength of classical realism, John's paintings are a testament to the power of tradition in the visual arts.

Kathy on John - One of the many aspects that I loved about Annapolis, where I lived for 25 years, was the opportunity to meet many talented artists, and enjoy their work. John Ebersberger has the ability to bring out the beauty in his own eyes, such as his taste for nature, and his portraits of women, in the vivid colors of his own impressions. The John Ebersberger paintings that I own give me great joy and I remember him with great fondness.

Acres U.S.A. is North America's oldest, largest magazine covering commercial-scale organic and sustainable farming.  The newspaper/magazine was started by Charles Walters in 1970.  Charles Walters was committed to “rescuing lost knowledge,” and his work has helped to change the world. Anyone committed to keeping up with the world of organic and sustainable farming, and those brave souls continuing to share their knowledge, visit this site and subscribe!

Kathy on Acres- Charles Walters was committed to rescuing lost knowledge, and I have been committed to rescuing lost spiritual philosophy, which pertains to Nature, Earth, the Universe, and all of humanity.  I was born the daughter of a poor Illinois farmer and, like Charles Walters, watched our world change as the Government began controlling farmland and all of our food sources.  I have been reading his paper since its inception, and I recommend it to everyone. Our health and our happiness are dependent upon organic and sustainable farming.  The chemicals in our corporate world are slowly killing us with multiple diseases. Eat organic!

Polyface Farms If you read Acres Magazine, you've heard of Joel Salatin! Kathy learned about Polyface from Acres more than 15 years ago. She drove hours from Annapolis, Maryland to Swope, Virginia several times a year, often with a van-load of people, to fill a freezer with "clean meat" and to stock up on fresh eggs. The Polyface farmily welcomes everyone with a smile and boundless enthusiasm characteristic of their determination to "heal" the way America lives and eats one farm and one family at a time. This caravan initiated Joel's "delivery" business to the Annapolis area, which continues growing today. Visit Polyface, meet the Salatins! You'll be glad you did.
